Day 90: The Grandson Who Said Lodi
At her house in San Juan, Socorro (B), in her eighties, is about to send fifty thousand pesos by GCash to someone who says he is her grandson and in trouble, when her son Orlando (A) drops by.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

Mom, wait, don't send it yet! Who's that fifty thousand for?
-
B
Migo. He says he had a motorcycle accident. He told me not to tell you, in case you'd get angry.
-
A
Mom, that's exactly how the scam works: an accident, a deadline, and you can't tell the family.
-
B
But look: "Lola, you're my lodi, my idol, werpa!" He's even polite, he says "po."
-
A
Lodi, werpa?
Lodi, werpa? That's slang from 2017, Mom. And Migo calls you "Mamita," not "Lola."

B
Maybe the boy's changed. I heard him crying on the phone earlier, and it sounded just like him.
-
A
Mom, AI can copy anyone's voice now. I'm calling Migo right now, on speaker.
-
B
Hurry, it's already four-thirty. He said if I don't send it before five, they'll lock him up.
-
A
Mom, Migo's in class, without a scratch. He says he doesn't even know how to ride a motorcycle.
-
B
Thank God. Block that "lodi." The fifty thousand goes to Migo instead, but don't you tell him why.
