Day 95: A Giant Like the Boss
In a workshop in Angono, Rizal, brothers Fernando (A) and Dante (C) are shaping papier-mache giants for the Higantes festival when Claire (B) of the town's tourism office, whom they have known for years, drops by to approve the designs.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Claire, perfect timing! The giants are done, just one left to paint.
-
B
Ang gaganda! 'Yung magsasaka, 'yung mangingisda, at 'yung... bakit naka-shades at may bigote 'yung pangatlo?
They're gorgeous! The farmer, the fisherman, and... why is the third one wearing sunglasses and a mustache?
-
C
Ah, 'yan? Generic na pulitiko lang 'yan, Claire. Puwedeng maging kamukha ng kahit sino.
Oh, that one? It's just a generic politician, Claire. It could look like anybody.
-
B
Kahit sino?
Anybody? Right down to the mole on Mayor's left cheek? You two are going to get me in trouble.
-
A
It's tradition, Claire: they say the giants started out as caricatures of the hacienda owners. And your boss really does have a big head, literally and otherwise.
-
B
Ah, ganoon? Madali ring mapunit.
Oh, is that so? Your parade permit is paper too, Fernando. It tears just as easily.
-
C
Relaks, Claire, papier-mache lang 'yan, magaan. Mahangin nga lang sa loob, gaya ng...
Relax, Claire, it's only papier-mache, it's light. A bit full of hot air inside, though, just like...
-
A
Dante, quiet. You're only blowing the problem up bigger, like a giant's head.
-
B
All right, here's the deal: I'll approve it, but the mole comes off. The sunglasses can stay, plenty of people wear sunglasses.
-
A
The mole goes. And in exchange, we'll make a giant of you too, to be fair.
-
B
Ako? Sige, basta mas matangkad sa amo ko. Minsan naman, ako ang titingalain.
Me? Fine, as long as it's taller than my boss. For once, I'll be the one people look up to.
-
C
Walang problema.
No problem. Taller, but with a smaller head, so you don't catch what he's got.
