Day 96: Does G Mean Yes?
In a trial court in Pasay, Ryan (A), a young call center agent, testifies about a chat in which his former roommate agreed with a single letter, "G," to take over the lease of their condo unit, and Judge Benita (B), sixty-eight, has questions about every word.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Your Honor, ito po ang chat noong Marso 3. Tanong ko po: "Ikaw na ba sa lease?" Sagot niya: "G."
Your Honor, this is the chat from March 3. I asked: "You taking over the lease?" His answer: "G."
-
B
Isang titik lang? Ipaliwanag mo, iho, para sa rekord: ano ang ibig sabihin ng "G"?
A single letter? Explain it for the record, iho: what does "G" mean?
-
A
G po, ibig sabihin, game, sige, go. Pagpayag po iyon, Your Honor, parang "oo, tara."
G means game, sure, go. It's agreement, Your Honor, like "yes, let's do it."
-
B
Game? Noong panahon ko, laro ang game, at hindi seryoso ang laro. Ano ang kasunod?
Game? In my day, a game was something you played, and playing isn't serious. What comes next?
-
A
"Bet, pero simula Hunyo pa ako magbabayad nang buo." Ibig sabihin po, payag siya, pero sa Hunyo pa po ang buong upa.
"Bet, but I'll only pay in full starting June." It means he agreed, but the full rent would start in June.
-
B
At ang "bet," iho, pustahan ba iyon? Kung pustahan, hindi kontrata iyan, sugal.
And "bet," iho, is that a wager? If it's a wager, that's not a contract, that's gambling.
-
A
Hindi po, Your Honor. Ang "bet" po ngayon, "gusto ko" o "sang-ayon ako." Wala pong perang nakataya.
No, Your Honor. These days "bet" means "I like it" or "I agree." There's no money riding on it.
-
B
Ilagay sa rekord: "bet," walang taya. Pero ang huling mensahe niya: "Libre mo 'ko ng samgyup bago ka umalis, charot." Ano ang "charot"?
Let the record show: "bet," no wager. But his last message reads: "Treat me to samgyup before you go, charot." What is "charot"?
-
A
"Charot" po, "joke lang." Pero sa samgyup lang po iyon nakakabit, Your Honor, hindi sa "G."
"Charot" means "just kidding." But it only goes with the samgyup, Your Honor, not with the "G."
-
B
Kung gayon, ang "charot" ay bumabawi lamang sa samgyup, hindi sa upa. Itala iyan ng stenographer, verbatim.
So the "charot" takes back only the samgyup, not the rent. Let the stenographer take that down verbatim.
-
A
Salamat po, Your Honor. Sana po, "G" rin ang korte.
Thank you, Your Honor. I hope the court is "G" too.
-
B
Iho, hindi "G" ang korte, at lalong hindi "bet." Submitted for decision ang kaso.
Iho, this court is not "G," and it is certainly not "bet." The case is submitted for decision.
