Day 102 of 215

Day 102: Ninang at Eighty

Paulo (B) visits his retired grade-school teacher, Ma'am Bining (A), now eighty, at her house to ask her to be a ninang, a principal sponsor, at his wedding.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Paulo, napadalaw ka! Ano ang sadya mo?

Paulo, what a nice surprise! What brings you here?

  2. B

Ma'am, ikakasal na po ako. Gusto ko po sanang kayo ang maging ninang namin.

Ma'am, I'm getting married. I was hoping you'd be our ninang.

  3. A

Ako? Nakakatuwa naman, ako pa ang naalala mo.

Me? How sweet of you to think of me.

  4. B

Sa inyo po ako natutong magbasa, Ma'am.

You're the one who taught me to read, Ma'am.

  5. A

Pero nakakahiya, nakatungkod na ako. Ang bagal ko nang maglakad.

But it's embarrassing, I use a cane now. I walk so slowly.

  6. B

Mas maganda nga po 'yon, Ma'am. Mas matagal kayong makikita ng lahat.

That makes it even better, Ma'am. Everyone gets to see you for longer.
