Day 151: The Line After the Brownout
Edna (A) and Ruby (B), clerks at the civil registry of a city hall in Manila, open the office the morning after a brownout shut everything down.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Ruby, tingnan mo 'yung pila, abot hanggang hagdan!
Ruby, look at the line, it goes all the way to the stairs!
-
B
Dahil sa brownout kahapon, doble ang pila ngayon. Kaya nga maaga akong pumasok.
Because of yesterday's brownout, the line's twice as long today. That's exactly why I came in early.
-
A
Paano natin 'to matatapos bago mag-lunch?
How are we going to get through this before lunch?
-
B
Hatiin natin. Ikaw sa birth certificate, ako na sa marriage at death.
Let's split it. You take the birth certificates, and I'll take marriages and deaths.
-
A
Sige, pero wala munang kape hanggang alas-dose, ha?
Okay, but no coffee until twelve, all right?
-
B
Kaya nga nagkape na ako sa bahay. O, buksan na natin ang window.
That's exactly why I had my coffee at home. Come on, let's open the service window.
