Day 176: Overheating on Marilaque

On their first road trip together, Maureen (A) and her boyfriend Chris (B) pull over at a roadside eatery halfway along the winding Marilaque Highway in Rizal, after the car's temperature gauge shoots up.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Buti na lang may kainan dito. Ano kaya'ng nangyari sa makina?

Good thing there's a place to eat here. What do you think happened to the engine?

  2. B

Dahil siguro sa haba ng akyat. Kanina pa tayo paakyat, e.

Probably the long climb. We've been going uphill for ages.

  3. A

Pero ang daming dumadaan dito, hindi naman sila nag-o-overheat.

But so many cars come through here, and they don't overheat.

  4. B

Kailan ko nga ba huling nilagyan ng tubig 'yung radiator?

Now when did I last put water in the radiator?

  5. A

Hindi mo na-check bago tayo umalis? Kaya pala may naaamoy ako kanina pa!

You didn't check before we left? So that's why I've been smelling something for a while!

  6. B

Sorry na. Habang lumalamig ang makina, libre ko ang lomi.

Sorry. While the engine cools down, the lomi's on me.
