Day 189 of 215

Day 189: Six Years Without a Raise

Megan (A), who works at an insurance company in Alabang, asks her aunt (B), an HR manager, for advice about her job.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Tita, paano po humingi ng raise nang hindi nagmumukhang walang utang na loob?

Tita, how do you ask for a raise without looking ungrateful?

  2. B

Bakit, wala ka pang dagdag-sahod mula noong pumasok ka?

Why, you haven't had a raise since you started?

  3. A

Wala pa po kahit piso, anim na taon na.

Not even one peso, and it's been six years.

  4. B

Matagal na 'yon, ha! Hindi masamang humingi, basta may maipapakita ka.

That's a long time! There's nothing wrong with asking, as long as you have something to show for it.

  5. A

Ano po ang ipapakita ko? Trabaho ko lang naman po 'yon.

What would I show? That's just my job.

  6. B

Ilista mo lahat ng nagawa mo. Sigurado akong mahaba 'yan.

Make a list of everything you've done. I'm sure it's a long one.
