Day 96: The Ring Became a Diploma

At the kitchen table, Carmina (B) tells her mother Gilda (A) her plan for her first big paycheck: to redeem the gold ring Gilda pawned years ago to pay Carmina's college tuition.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

  1. A

    O, bakit ang saya mo?

Oh, what are you so happy about?

  2. B

Sumahod na po ako, Ma! Tutubusin ko na 'yung singsing ninyo.

I got paid, Mom! I'm finally going to redeem your ring.

  3. A

Naku, anak, naremata na 'yon noon pa.

Oh, sweetheart, that was auctioned off ages ago.

  4. B

Po? Kung alam ko lang po, nag-part-time sana ako noon.

What? If only I'd known, I would have gotten a part-time job back then.

  5. A

Huwag mo nang isipin 'yon. Hindi nawala ang singsing, naging diploma mo.

Don't think about it anymore. The ring wasn't lost. It became your diploma.

  6. B

Ma naman, pinapaiyak po ninyo ako. Bibilhan ko po kayo ng bago.

Oh, Mom, you're making me cry. I'll buy you a new one.
