Day 127 of 185

Day 127: Too Hot for Afternoon Classes

Over breakfast in Pateros, Sonny (A), the principal of a public elementary school, asks his mother Bining (B), a school nurse for thirty years before she retired, whether to send the pupils home at noon again as the heat index hits forty-two.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Ma, forty-two raw po ang heat index. Pauuwiin ko na po ba ulit ang mga bata?

Mom, they say the heat index is forty-two. Should I send the kids home early again?

  2. B

Noong nasa clinic pa ako, binabantayan ko kung may namumutla o nahihilo.

Back when I was at the clinic, I'd watch for any child turning pale or getting dizzy.

  3. A

Ganyan na nga po. Nagkakasakit na po ang ilan.

That's exactly what's happening. Some of them are already getting sick.

  4. B

Mainit din naman noon, a. Bakit parang mas malala ngayon?

It was hot back then too, you know. Why does it seem worse now?

  5. A

Limampu na po sila sa isang classroom, at iisa lang ang electric fan.

There are fifty of them in one classroom now, and just one electric fan.

  6. B

Kung ganoon, pauwiin mo na. Mas mabuting mahuli sila sa leksiyon kaysa may maospital.

Then send them home. Better for them to fall behind on lessons than to have a child end up in the hospital.

  7. A

Tama po kayo. Hindi rin naman po sila nakakapag-concentrate sa ganitong init.

You're right. They can't really concentrate in this heat anyway.
