With a strong typhoon expected by the weekend, Jocelyn (A) chats over the fence with her neighbor Eric (B) in their subdivision in Dasmariñas, Cavite, admiring his huge mango tree, whose branches hang over her roof.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

Ang lago na ng mangga mo, ano? Lalo na ngayong may bagyong darating.
Your mango tree has gotten so big, hasn't it? Especially with a typhoon on the way.
-
B
Oo nga, e. Ang sarap magkape sa lilim niyan tuwing hapon.
It sure has. It's so nice having coffee in its shade every afternoon.
-
A
Masarap nga. Kaso tuwing mahangin, naririnig kong kumakaskas ang mga sanga sa bubong namin.
It is. But whenever it's windy, I can hear the branches scraping our roof.
-
B
Ah, 'yon pala. Medyo mahaba na nga ang mga sanga.
Oh, so that's what you mean. The branches have gotten a little long.
-
A
Medyo lang? Puwede mo kayang ipaputol 'yan bago mag-Sabado?
A little? Do you think you could get them cut before Saturday?
-
B
Ang problema, fully booked daw ang tree-trimming ng barangay hanggang katapusan ng buwan.
The problem is, they say the barangay's tree-trimming crew is fully booked until the end of the month.

A
E 'di tayo na lang. May lagari ako, ako na ang hahawak ng hagdan.
Then let's do it ourselves. I've got a saw, and I'll hold the ladder.
