Visiting her cousin Tomas (B) in Nueva Ecija a year after he left Manila to farm rice, Imelda (A) asks how province life has treated him.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

Isang taon ka na rito, Tomas. Kumusta naman ang buhay-probinsiya?
You've been here a year now, Tomas. So how's province life?
-
B
Tahimik, pero may gabing naligaw ako sa bukid pauwi galing sa bayan.
Quiet, but there was one night I got lost in the fields on my way home from town.
-
A
Ikaw, naligaw? E ang liit lang ng baryo rito.
You got lost? But the village here is tiny.

B
Walang ilaw sa daan, e. Madilim na, tapos biglang may liwanag sa likod ko.
There are no lights on the road. It was already dark, and then suddenly there was a light behind me.
-
A
Hala, huwag mong sabihing multo 'yon.
Oh no, don't tell me it was a ghost.
-
B
Hindi, kuliglig pala ng kapitbahay namin. Sabi niya, "Sakay na, Tomas, bago ka pa umabot ng Tarlac!"
No, it was our neighbor on his kuliglig. He said, "Hop on, Tomas, before you end up in Tarlac!"

A
Buti ka pa. Ako, apat na oras sa EDSA, tapos biglang na-lowbat pa ang phone ko.
Lucky you. Me, I spent four hours stuck on EDSA, and then my phone suddenly died on top of it.
