Day 144: A Government Job at Last?
Over coffee at a bakery in Kamuning, Joselito (A), a sales manager tired of chasing quotas, tells his old friend Nestor (B), a clerk at city hall for twenty years, that he is taking the civil service exam.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Pare, I'm taking the civil service exam. I'm sick and tired of quotas.
-
B
Tama 'yan. Sigurado ang pensiyon mo sa gobyerno.
Good call. Your pension's guaranteed in government.
-
A
That's exactly what I'm thinking. No more boss yelling when sales come up short.
-
B
On top of that, they can't just fire you. That's why so many people like you are moving to government.
-
A
So why do I see a "but" on your face?
-
B
Because nobody tells new hires this: your first paycheck takes three months to arrive.
-
A
Tatlong buwan?
Three months? Then coffee's on you until then.
