Day 145 of 185

Day 145: The Bonus That Lasted One Day

In the office pantry in Ortigas in mid-December, Sally (A), a senior accounting staff member, catches her young coworker Ralph (B) planning how to spend his first thirteenth-month pay.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Ralph, ano 'yang tinitingnan mo? Mukhang may bibilhin ka, a.

Ralph, what's that you're looking at? Looks like you're about to buy something.

  2. B

Opo, Ate Sally.

Yes, Ate Sally. A new phone, once my thirteenth-month pay comes in.

  3. A

I was like that too, back then. The minute I got my bonus, my sister called: "Ate, I'm short on my tuition!"

  4. B

    Naku po. Tapos?

    Oh no. And then?

  5. A

Then, of all times, our fridge broke down. And that night there was a reunion, and the lechon was on me.

  6. B

Wow, all in one day? Okay, I'm making a list before the money even comes in.

  7. A

Mabuti.

Good. Put the bills first, then think about the phone.
