Day 146 of 185

Day 146: Nanay Wants the City

At the old family house in San Miguel, Bulacan, Mylene (A) asks her widowed mother Saling (B), once again, to move to Manila, and expects the usual no.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Ma, itatanong ko po ulit: sasama na po ba kayo sa Maynila?

Mom, I'm asking again: will you come to Manila with me now?

  2. B

Oo, sasama na ako. Malayo rito ang ospital, at buwan-buwan na ang checkup ko.

Yes, I'll come. The hospital is far from here, and I have checkups every month now.

  3. A

Po? Kayo po ba talaga 'yan, Ma?

What? Is that really you, Mom?

  4. B

Ako nga. Saka wala na akong kasama rito mula nang mawala ang tatay mo.

It's really me. Besides, I've had no one with me here since your father passed away.

  5. A

Pero Ma, ang presko po rito. Sa Maynila po, puro usok at busina.

But Mom, the air is so fresh here. Manila is nothing but smoke and honking.

  6. B

Nasa Maynila rin ang mga apo ko. Kaya naman doon na ako titira.

And my grandchildren are in Manila too. So that's where I'm going to live.

  7. A

Ma, isang kuwarto lang po ang condo ko. Sino po sa atin ang matutulog sa sofa?

Mom, my condo has only one bedroom. Which of us is sleeping on the sofa?
