Day 154: No Approved Therapeutic Claims
Walking home from the Saturday market in Cainta, Evelyn (A), a pharmacist, notices a box of herbal capsules in the bag of her friend Perla (B), who has diabetes.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

Ano 'yang kapsula sa bag mo, Perla? Bago 'yan, a.
What are those capsules in your bag, Perla? Those are new.

B
Herbal 'to, galing sa pinsan ko. Pamalit daw sa maintenance, at natural pa.
They're herbal, from my cousin. She says they replace maintenance meds, and they're natural too.
-
A
Hindi 'yan aprubadong gamot. Nakasulat mismo sa kahon: "No approved therapeutic claims."
That's not an approved medicine. It says so right on the box: "No approved therapeutic claims."

B
Pero ang dami raw gumaling diyan, sabi ng pinsan ko.
But my cousin says lots of people got better with them.
-
A
Puro testimonya lang 'yon. Bukod diyan, hindi niyan kayang pababain ang sugar mo gaya ng metformin.
Those are just testimonials. Besides, they can't bring your sugar down the way metformin does.
-
B
Huwag kang magagalit, ha? Isang linggo na akong hindi umiinom ng metformin.
Don't get mad, okay? I haven't taken my metformin in a week.

So that's why you were so thirsty earlier. Take it again later, and let's get you a checkup on Monday.
