Day 28: The Embroiderer Says Maybe

In her house in Lumban, Laguna, Ciring (A), who has hand-embroidered barong for fifty years, asks Anton (B), a young fashion designer who has come by for the second time this week, what he really wants.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Ano ba talaga ang pakay mo, iho? Pangalawang balik mo na.

What is it you're really after, iho? This is your second visit.

  2. B

Gusto ko po sanang kayo ang maging head embroiderer ng brand ko.

I was hoping you'd be the head embroiderer for my brand.

  3. A

Siguro iba na lang ang kunin mo. Malabo na ang mata ko.

Maybe you should get someone else. My eyesight isn't what it was.

  4. B

Bibilhan ko po kayo ng magandang salamin, Nanay.

I'll buy you a good pair of glasses, Nanay.

  5. A

Pitumpung taon na ako, iho. Baka hindi ko na kayanin.

I'm seventy, iho. I may not be up to it anymore.

  6. B

Kayo po ang nagburda nitong barong ni Lolo sa kasal niya. Dito po nagsimula ang lahat.

You're the one who embroidered this barong for my grandfather's wedding. That's where it all began.
