Day 44 of 185

Day 44: Twenty Years of Remittances Saved

Home for good in Pagsanjan, Laguna, after twenty years as a caregiver in Israel, Ester (A) worries aloud to her father Mando (B) that she has no savings of her own.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Tay, wala po akong ipon kahit piso. Paano na po kaya ako?

Dad, I don't have a single peso saved. What's going to become of me?

  2. B

Bakit mo naman nasabi 'yan, anak?

Why would you say that, sweetheart?

  3. A

Lahat po ng kinita ko, ipinadala ko rito. Ngayon, saan po ako kukuha?

Everything I earned, I sent home. Now where am I supposed to get money?

  4. B

Heto, tingnan mo. Hindi para sa akin ang padala mo kundi para sa 'yo.

Here, take a look. The money you sent wasn't for me, it was for you.

  5. A

Passbook po? Nakapangalan po sa akin?

    A passbook? In my name?

  6. B

Kinuha ko lang ang kailangan ko. Ako mismo ang naghuhulog ng sobra sa bangko buwan-buwan.

I only took what I needed. I've been putting the rest in the bank myself, every month.
