Day 59: No Fishing Inside the Buoys

On the beach of a fishing village in Nasugbu, Batangas, Dencio (A), an old fisherman, complains to Lina (B), the town's fisheries officer, about the new marine sanctuary.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Lina, what's this about fishing inside the buoys being banned now?

  2. B

That's a sanctuary now, Mang Dencio, so the fish can come back.

  3. A

E paano naman ang paghahanapbuhay ko? Apatnapung taon na akong nangingisda riyan.

And what about my livelihood? I've been fishing there for forty years.

  4. B

I know. You're the very reason I'm here.

  5. A

Bakit? Para sabihing huwag na akong pumalaot?

Why? To tell me not to go out to sea anymore?

  6. B

No. You're the one we need in the Bantay Dagat, you know those waters by heart.

  7. A

Me, a sea warden? Well, not bad, I'd still be out on the water every day.
