Day 79 of 185

Day 79: Sleeping Through the Daylight

At three in the afternoon in their apartment near Eastwood, Quezon City, Danica (A), still wide awake after her night shift at a call center, turns to her roommate Sheena (B), who works the same shift but sleeps soundly every day.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Alas-tres na, gising pa rin ako. Paano ka nakakatulog nang ganito kaliwanag?

It's three o'clock and I'm still awake. How do you sleep when it's this bright?

  2. B

Bumili ako ng blackout curtain para makatulog ako nang diretso kahit tirik ang araw.

I bought blackout curtains so I can sleep straight through even with the sun blazing.

  3. A

E 'yung ingay ng construction sa tapat?

What about the noise from the construction across the street?

  4. B

Earplugs. Saka alas-nuwebe ng umaga ang tulog ko, araw-araw, kahit day off.

Earplugs. And I'm in bed by nine in the morning, every day, even on my days off.

  5. A

Gagayahin kita. Pero hindi ko kayang hindi mag-scroll pagkauwi.

I'll do what you do. But I can't stop scrolling once I'm home.

  6. B

Kaya iniiwan ko ang cellphone ko sa kusina, para hindi ko maabot.

That's why I leave my phone in the kitchen, so I can't reach it.

  7. A

Sa kusina? Mukhang doon na rin ako matutulog.

In the kitchen? Looks like I'll be sleeping in there too.
