Day 106: Consent Before the Clinic App
At a small software company in Makati, Faith (A), the company's young data protection officer, goes over the plans of her friend Anika (B), a developer building a booking app for a clinic.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Anika, why does the app need to keep a photo of every patient's ID?
-
B
So the clinic can be sure a real person made the booking. There are so many fake names.

A
Listen to this: under the Data Privacy Act, the number on a government-issued ID is sensitive information.
-
B
Kaya nga may checkbox ako para sa consent. Ayos na 'yon, 'di ba?
That's why I put in a checkbox for consent. That covers it, right?
-
A
Kulang 'yon.
That's not enough. For every piece of data we keep, there has to be a clear purpose, and nothing beyond it.
-
B
So all the clinic needs is to see the ID, not keep it?
-
A
Mismo.
Exactly. Can you check IDs without piling up photos?
-
B
Kaya 'yan.
Sure. The app reads the name on the ID, compares it with the booking, then deletes it right away.

Then only "verified" and the date stay in the database. First time I'll sign off on your work without a complaint.
