Day 118 of 160

Day 118: A Eulogy With One Joke

At home in Parañaque, the night before the funeral of his closest friend from work, Cesar (A) reads the eulogy he has written to his wife, Claire (B).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

"Namatay si Rudy noong Martes dahil sa cancer." Masyado bang diretso?

"Rudy died on Tuesday of cancer." Is that too blunt?

  2. B

Medyo. Huwag mong sabihing "namatay"; mas mabuting "pumanaw" o "yumao," at banggitin mo ang kabaitan niya.

A little. Don't say "died"; "passed away" or "departed" is better, and mention how kind he was.

  3. A

"Pumanaw si Rudy noong Martes, matapos ang mahabang pakikipaglaban sa sakit." Ganoon?

"Rudy passed away on Tuesday, after a long battle with illness." Like that?

  4. B

Better. But why call him "hot-headed" when his children will be there?

  5. A

E totoo naman. Sige, gawin nating "prangka at hindi nagpapaligoy-ligoy."

Well, it's true. Fine, let's make it "frank, and never one to beat around the bush."

  6. B

Ganyan nga siya. Ano pa ang kasunod?

That's exactly who he was. What comes next?

  7. A

Just one story: at the Christmas party, the pillow fell out of his Santa Claus costume while he was dancing.

  8. B

Sa harap ng kabaong? Baka isipin ng pamilya niya, ginagawa mo siyang katatawanan.

In front of the coffin? His family might think you're making a joke of him.

  9. A

Rudy himself told that story every Christmas. If anyone laughs tomorrow, he'll be the happiest of all.
