Day 126: The Kulebra Around Her Waist

At a clinic in San Andres, Manila, Dr. Jillian (B), a young dermatologist, tells Lola Herminia (A) what the painful rash on her side is.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

  1. A

Doc, what is this burning thing on my side? I haven't slept for three nights.

  2. B

This is herpes zoster. Herpes zoster is caused by the same virus as chickenpox.

  3. A

Herpes ano?

Herpes what? Dear, say it in words I can understand.

  4. B

Kulebra po, Lola. 'Yung virus ng bulutong ninyo noong bata kayo, nagising ulit.

It's kulebra, Lola. The chickenpox virus you had as a child has woken up again.

  5. A

Kaya pala parang sinisilaban ang balat ko. May gamot ba, o dasal na lang?

So that's why my skin feels like it's on fire. Is there medicine for it, or is it down to prayer?

  6. B

There is. You'll take an antiviral for a week, and there's medicine for the burning too.

  7. A

Be straight with me, dear. Once it goes all the way around my waist and the ends meet, I'll die, won't I?

  8. B

That saying isn't true. It usually stays on one side, and you'll get better even if the rash goes all the way around.

  9. A

Salamat, iha.

Thank you, dear. The trouble is, I've already given my jewelry away to my grandchildren!
