Day 136: Too Early to Call
On election night in the newsroom of a broadcaster in Quezon City, desk editor Gigi (A) and veteran reporter Larry (B) debate whether to call a close mayoral race with sixty percent of the votes counted, and Troy (C), the young data analyst, has the numbers.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Larry, sixty percent na ang bilang. Lamang pa rin ba si Reyes?
Larry, we're at sixty percent counted. Is Reyes still ahead?
-
B
He's up by three thousand, Gigi. Let's call it before the other station beats us to it.
-
C
Hold on. Almost all the precincts left are in the villages, Dizon's stronghold.
-
A
How many votes from there still haven't come in, Troy?
-
C
About eleven thousand. If Dizon gets two out of every three votes there, he'll pull ahead.
-
B
Two out of three? I've covered elections here for fifteen years, that hardly ever happens.
-
C
In 2022, that's exactly what he got in those villages.
-
A
We're not calling it. On air: "Reyes appears to be winning, but this may still change once the votes from the villages come in."
-
B
Tila, maaari, kapag... Parang weather forecast na tayo, Gigi.
Appears, may, once... We sound like a weather forecast, Gigi.
