Day 144: The Fault Near the Tower
In the admin office of a condominium in Muntinlupa, Gina (B), a structural engineer from the city's disaster office, explains to building administrator Sammy (A) what the West Valley Fault, a few hundred meters away, means for his twenty-story tower.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Engineer, be honest with me: will our building collapse when the fault moves?
-
B
Your building isn't on the fault itself, so the ground beneath it won't split open.
-
A
In short, we're safe because we're far from the fault?
-
B
Not exactly. The strong shaking will reach this far, and your building's design is old.
-
A
So the building will be safe as long as we have it retrofitted?
-
B
Safer, not safe. It may be damaged in a strong earthquake, but it won't collapse while you get out.
-
A
Therefore it won't collapse after all, so the board can wait another year?
-
B
Iba po ang sinabi ko, Sir Sammy. Hindi po naghihintay ng budget ang lindol.
That's not what I said, Sir Sammy. Earthquakes don't wait for the budget.
