Watching the Independence Day rites on TV at home in Kawit, Cavite, Tonyo (A), a retired postman, tells his son Pablo (B), a history teacher, that he grew up celebrating independence on July 4.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

A
When I was a kid, Independence Day was July 4, not June 12.
-
B
But Dad, wasn't independence declared right here in Kawit in 1898?
-
A
Declared, sure, but who ran things afterward? The Americans, right?
-
B
Yes, but if we hadn't risen up back then, would there even have been a 1946?
-
A
What good is a freedom that's only on paper? We only truly governed ourselves in 1946.
-
B
You reap what you sow, Dad. 1946 was just the harvest of 1898.
-
A
Hindi ba't puwedeng tama tayong dalawa? Sige, lakasan mo, kakanta na sila.
Can't we both be right? Go on, turn it up, they're about to sing.
