Day 153 of 160

Day 153: Air Quality at Recess

At a public elementary school beside a busy highway in Taguig, Ingrid (A), a government scientist, finishes a formal Filipino briefing for the teachers on the air-quality sensors her team has installed, then has coffee with the principal, Lauro (B).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

In sum, these sensors will measure fine dust and smoke every hour.

  2. B

That was great, Ma'am, but your Tagalog was so deep; I think someone in the back nodded off.

  3. A

Sorry, Sir, our script really is formal. Take a guess: where is the air dirtiest here?

  4. B

At the gate, I suppose, facing the highway. That's where the trucks go by.

  5. A

It's dirty there, true. But where do the kids play at recess?

  6. B

Next to the drop-off lane! The jeepneys line up there with their engines running.

  7. A

Exactly. That's why we're putting a sensor there, at the height of a Grade 1 child.

  8. B

If the highest readings come from there, no more running engines inside the school.

  9. A

I'll explain the results to the teachers in Taglish, so nobody nods off.
