Day 155: The Flour in His Lungs
At a lung specialist's clinic in Santa Rosa, Laguna, Dr. Cristina (B) goes over the breathing tests of Gerry (A), a baker of twenty years who has been coughing and wheezing before dawn for months.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Doc, what did the breathing test show? I've never had a cough like this before.
-
B
It looks like asthma, but not the usual kind. When is your cough at its worst?
-
A
Before dawn, while I'm kneading. But on Sundays, when we're closed, my chest feels clear.
-
B
The flour may be the cause; it's called baker's asthma.
-
A
Then what happens to my bakery? If I stop, the whole barangay goes without pandesal.
-
B
I'm not saying you should stop. A mask and an exhaust fan may well be enough.
-
A
How can we be sure it's the flour, and not the smoke from the oven?
-
B
There's a skin test to find out if you're allergic to flour.
-
A
I hope it's the oven. An oven is easier to replace than a baker.
