Day 156 of 160

Day 156: Evaluating Ana's Speech

At a public speaking club in Makati, Ana (A), a young nurse, asks Ernesto (B), the evening's evaluator, to go over his critique of her seven-minute speech about her grandmother's sari-sari store.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Sir Ernesto, could you go over your evaluation again? It went by so fast earlier, and I was still nervous.

  2. B

First, your topic was lovely: your grandmother's store, which you're always telling us about. What's always on your lips is what's in your heart.

  3. A

Thank you. But earlier you said there was one thing I should fix?

  4. B

Perhaps you rushed a little at the start; for the first minute, it was as if a dog were chasing you.

  5. A

I was nervous; it felt like everyone was watching the timer.

  6. B

All in all, your speech was excellent: clear, heartfelt, and within the seven minutes.

  7. A

Buti na lang po. E ano po ang pinakanagustuhan ninyo?

What a relief. So what did you like best?

  8. B

The joke you didn't prepare: when you forgot your line and said, "Put it on my tab."

  9. A

That was the line Lola's regulars used. I heard it for twenty years at the store.
