Day 157: Dubbed or Subtitled?
On a Saturday night at home in Cainta, Tristan (A), a film student, puts on an anime classic dubbed in Tagalog for his aunt Cecilia (B) and her teenage son Lance (C).
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

Tita, dito po kayo umupo. Lance, Tagalog dub ang papanoorin natin, kaya walang reklamo.
Tita, have a seat here. Lance, we're watching the Tagalog dub, so no complaints.
-
B
Ay, 'yan ang pinapanood ko pag-uwi galing eskuwela! Halos lahat ng cartoons noon, Tagalog.
Oh, that's what I used to watch when I got home from school! Almost all the cartoons back then were in Tagalog.

C
Ayoko po ng dubbed, Ma. Kuya, 'yung Japanese na may subtitles na lang.
I don't want the dubbed one, Ma. Kuya, just put on the Japanese with subtitles.
-
A
Hindi ba't mas tumatama ang biro kapag Tagalog? Sining din ang pag-dub, hindi lang pagbasa ng script.
Don't the jokes land better in Tagalog? Dubbing is an art too, not just reading a script.
-
C
Paano kung mali ang pagkakasalin, Kuya? E 'di iba na ang sinasabi ng karakter.
What if the translation's wrong, Kuya? Then the character's saying something else.
-
A
Lahat ng pagsasalin, may binabago. Pati ang subtitles mo, pinaikli para mabasa mo agad.
Every translation changes something. Even your subtitles are cut down so you can read them fast.

C
Pero boses ng orihinal na aktor ang gusto kong marinig. 'Di ba, kalahati ng pag-arte ang boses?
But I want to hear the original actor's voice. Isn't the voice half the acting?
-
B
Tama na kayong dalawa. Kabisado ko pa ang Tagalog na theme song nito, pakinggan ninyo.
Enough, you two. I still know the Tagalog theme song by heart, listen.

C
Ma, huwag po kayong kumanta! Kuya, i-play mo na 'yung dubbed, bilis!
Ma, please don't sing! Kuya, play the dubbed one, quick!
