Day 24: The Judge Cross-Examines His Doctor

At an eye clinic in Manila, Eusebio (A), a retired judge who speaks formal Filipino even at the doctor's, hears from Victor (B), his ophthalmologist, what is clouding his left eye.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Doctor, answer me directly: what did you find in my eye?

  2. B

According to the examination, a cataract is clouding your left eye, but it can easily be operated on.

  3. A

Easy for whom, for you or for me? How many times have you performed it?

  4. B

Over two thousand. It takes only twenty minutes, and you won't feel any pain.

  5. A

Ano ang mga panganib? Huwag kang maglilihim sa hukumang ito.

What are the risks? Withhold nothing from this court.

  6. B

Infection is rare, as long as you don't skip your eye drops.

  7. A

Sapat na ang iyong testimonya, Doktor. Pumapayag na ako sa operasyon.

Your testimony suffices, Doctor. I consent to the operation.
