Day 27 of 160

Day 27: Rewrite This Press Release

At the Manila office of the government's news agency, Jerry (A), the editor of its Filipino service, interviews Rolly (B), a former teacher applying as a news writer, and has him turn an English press release into a news story in formal Filipino on the spot.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Heto po ang press release ng DA. Gawin po ninyong balita sa Filipino.

Here's the DA's press release. Please turn it into a news story in Filipino.

  2. B

Sige po. "Ayon sa Kagawaran ng Agrikultura, tumaas ang ani ng palay ngayong taon."

All right. "According to the Department of Agriculture, the rice harvest rose this year."

  3. A

Mahusay po. Ituloy po ninyo, 'yung tungkol sa presyo.

Very good. Go on, the part about the price.

  4. B

"Subalit bumaba naman ang farmgate price..." Ano po ba ang farmgate price sa Filipino?

"However, the farmgate price fell..." What's "farmgate price" in Filipino?

  5. A

Tatlong taon na po naming pinagtatalunan iyan. Kayo po, ano ang isusulat ninyo?

We've been arguing about that for three years. What would you write?

  6. B

"Presyo ng palay sa bukid," at nasa panaklong po ang Ingles.

"Presyo ng palay sa bukid," the farm price of rice, with the English in parentheses.

  7. A

Iyan po mismo ang napagkasunduan namin kahapon. Kailan po kayo puwedeng magsimula?

That's exactly what we agreed on yesterday. When can you start?
