Day 28: Copyright at the Dinner Table
At the dinner table at home in Quezon City, Xavier (A), a young musician who earns from streaming, catches his younger brother Jairus (B), a high school student, watching a pirated copy of a new movie.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Jairus, ano 'yang pinapanood mo? Kakalabas lang niyan sa sinehan, a.
Jairus, what are you watching? That just came out in theaters.
-
B
Pinasa lang ng kaklase ko, Kuya. Mayaman naman ang mga artista, hindi nila mararamdaman.
A classmate just sent it to me, Kuya. The actors are rich anyway, they won't even feel it.
-
A
Hindi libre ang pinaghirapan ng mga may-akda, Jairus. May karapatang-ari sila rito.
What the authors worked so hard on isn't free, Jairus. They hold the copyright to it.
-
B
Karapatang-ari? Ang lalim mo naman, Kuya, saan mo napulot 'yan?
Copyright? Listen to you with the deep words, Kuya. Where'd you pick that up?
-
A
Sa kontrata ko. Bawat kopyang pinirata, bawas sa kabuhayan ng lahat ng gumawa, mula editor hanggang extra.
From my contract. Every pirated copy cuts into the livelihood of everyone who made it, from the editor to the extras.
-
B
Hindi ko naisip 'yon. Pati 'yung mga kanta mo, pinipirata rin?
I never thought of that. So your songs get pirated too?
-
A
Araw-araw. Kaya burahin mo na 'yan, at sa Sabado, sagot ko ang sine.
Every day. So delete that, and on Saturday the movie's on me.
