Day 32 of 160

Day 32: Memories Under the Lahar

In Bacolor, Pampanga, Lani (A), a history professor, and Jordan (C), her young research assistant, record the memories of Ompong (B), a retired farmer who saw lahar bury half of the town church in the 1990s.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Mang Ompong, when was the church buried by the lahar?

  2. B

Marahil tag-ulan iyon ng 1995. Tila Agosto, pero hindi na ako sigurado.

Perhaps it was the rainy season of 1995. August, it seems, but I'm not sure anymore.

  3. C

Ma'am, the town hall's records have a different month. Should I correct it?

  4. B

Son, I was the one who was there, not the town hall. I saw with my own eyes when the lahar swallowed half the church.

  5. A

Huwag, Jordan.

Don't, Jordan. We'll write down Mang Ompong's memory, and put the town hall's date in a footnote.

  6. C

Mang Ompong, how did you feel back then?

  7. B

It felt like a death in the family, son. But we still go to Mass there to this day.
