Day 34: Tawa-Tawa and Platelets

In a hospital ward in Manila, Eli (A), a doctor, tells Patricia (C), who has dengue, and her roommate Liezel (B) the result of her latest platelet count.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Bumaba pa ang platelet mo, Patricia, kaya isang gabi ka pa rito.

Your platelets have dropped even lower, Patricia, so you're staying one more night.

  2. B

Doc, delikado na po ba? Wala na nga po siyang lagnat.

Doc, is it serious? She doesn't even have a fever anymore.

  3. C

Puwede na po ba akong umuwi? May presentation po ako sa Lunes.

Can I go home now? I have a presentation on Monday.

  4. A

Sa dengue, kapag nawala ang lagnat, doon pa madalas nagsisimula ang pinakadelikadong yugto.

With dengue, the most dangerous phase often starts just when the fever goes away.

  5. B

Pinadala po ni Mama itong tawa-tawa. Puwede po ba niyang inumin?

My mom sent this tawa-tawa tea. Can she drink it?

  6. A

Ayon sa ilang pag-aaral, nakatutulong ang tawa-tawa; gayunman, kulang pa ang patunay. Puwede, pero hindi kapalit ng suwero.

According to some studies, tawa-tawa helps; even so, the evidence is still lacking. She can, but not in place of the IV.

  7. C

Opo, Doc, isang gabi pa. Liezel, pakisabi kay Tita, iinumin ko 'yan.

Okay, Doc, one more night. Liezel, tell your mom I'll drink it.
