Day 35 of 160

Day 35: Only a Rumor So Far

At a coffee shop in Binondo, Loleng (A), a retired journalist, reads the story her young mentee Warren (B) wants to file: that an old Art Deco movie house in Santa Cruz, Manila, will be torn down.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

"Gigibain na ang lumang sinehan sa Avenida." Ilan ang source mo rito, Warren?

"The old movie house on Avenida will be torn down." How many sources do you have for this, Warren?

  2. B

Isa po, 'yung guwardiya roon. Narinig daw po niya mismo sa may-ari.

One, the security guard there. He says he heard it straight from the owner.

  3. A

Isang source? Isulat mo: tila may balak na gibain ang sinehan.

One source? Write this: there appear to be plans to tear down the movie house.

  4. B

Pero, Ma'am, kapag naunahan po ako ng ibang diyaryo, sayang ang scoop.

But, Ma'am, if another paper beats me to it, there goes my scoop.

  5. A

Mas sayang kung mali ka. Maaaring ibenta lang ang gusali, hindi gibain.

It's a bigger waste if you're wrong. The building might just be sold, not torn down.

  6. B

Tatawagan ko po muna ang may-ari at ang city hall bago ko ipasa.

I'll call the owner and city hall first before I file it.

  7. A

Alam mo, noong dekada otsenta, isinulat ko ring gigibain na 'yan. Nakatayo pa rin hanggang ngayon.

You know, back in the eighties, I wrote that it was going to be torn down too. It's still standing to this day.
