Day 41 of 160

Day 41: Crystals, Not a Stroke

At a clinic in Quezon City, Doray (A), an older woman who has had dizzy spells for a week, tells Dr. Leni (B) she is sure she is about to have a stroke.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

  1. A

Dok, stroke na 'to, sigurado ako. Isang linggo na akong nahihilo.

Doc, it's a stroke, I'm sure of it. I've been dizzy for a week.

  2. B

Kalma lang po, Nanay. Kailan po kayo nahihilo: pagbangon, o paglingon?

Please stay calm, Nanay. When do you get dizzy: when you get up, or when you turn your head?

  3. A

When I get up, the whole room spins, but only for a moment.

  4. B

The problem may be in your ear, not your brain; it looks like some tiny crystals have shifted out of place.

  5. A

Crystals in my ear? And last night I already said goodbye to my grandchildren!

  6. B

Don't say your goodbyes just yet. Turn your head to the right, then lie back quickly.

  7. A

Ayan na, umiikot na naman! Ano, Dok, stroke ba o hindi?

There it goes, it's spinning again! So, Doc, is it a stroke or not?

  8. B

No. Your eyes moved on their own, so it's the crystals after all. A few movements of the head, and you'll be fine.
