Day 45: Fifty Pesos More to Cagbalete

At the municipal hall of Mauban, Quezon, Alberto (A), the town's tourism officer, receives Jun (B), the young president of the boatmen's association, who has brought the boatmen's written request for a higher fare to Cagbalete Island.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

  1. A

Maupo po kayo, Presidente. Ano po ang sadya ng mga bangkero?

Please have a seat, Mr. President. What brings the boatmen here?

  2. B

Per our association's resolution, we are requesting an additional fifty pesos on the fare.

  3. A

Limampu agad?

Fifty, just like that? That's a lot for the tourists, and even more for the islanders.

  4. B

Diesel has gone up a lot since the last fare increase.

  5. A

I understand, but the tourists might stay away. How about thirty?

  6. B

Forty, and we won't ask for another increase for three years.

  7. A

All right, forty, on one condition: no increase for students and Cagbalete residents.

  8. B

We agree. First thing tomorrow, the amended resolution will be on your desk.
