Day 46 of 160

Day 46: A Letter Against the Advertiser

At the office of a weekly community newspaper in Tarlac City, Iday (A), the older publisher who founded the paper, wants to print a reader's letter complaining about the city's biggest mall, and her editor Orly (B) has his doubts.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Orly, let's run the letter about the flooding behind the mall on Friday.

  2. B

Ma'am, the mall is our biggest advertiser. What if they pull out?

  3. A

Isn't this paper for its readers, not for its advertisers?

  4. B

And who'll pay our salaries once their ads are gone?

  5. A

And who'll trust us anymore if we bury the complaint?

  6. B

The letter only gives one side. Shouldn't the mall be heard too?

  7. A

Tama ka. Tawagan mo sila; magkatabi nating ilalabas ang liham at ang sagot nila.

You're right. Call them, and we'll run the letter and their reply side by side.

  8. B

Opo.

Will do. And if they don't answer: "The mall's management had not responded as of this writing."
