Day 5: The Date on the Marker

At the plaza of a town in Cavite, Mando (A), a retired teacher and the town's historian, Henry (B), the municipal tourism officer, and Ofelia (C), a researcher from the National Historical Commission, go over the text of the town's new historical marker.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Henry, the year on the draft is wrong. This town was founded in 1740.

  2. B

Sir, Ma'am Ofelia from the NHCP wrote that.

  3. C

According to the parish records, the town was founded in 1754.

  4. A

Dokumento lang ba ang totoo? Hindi sinungaling ang lolo ko.

Are documents the only truth? My grandfather was no liar.

  5. C

We're not saying he was wrong. Even so, whatever goes on the marker needs proof.

  6. B

How about this: 1754 on the marker, and your grandfather's story in the town museum.

  7. A

As long as his name is on it, and I'm the one who tells visitors the story.
