Day 58: Not Allergic, Just Intolerant
At a clinic in Ortigas, Dr. Pia (A) gives Aubrey (B), a young accountant who thought she was allergic to milk tea, the result of her test.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
According to the test, you're not allergic to milk; however, your stomach can't digest its sugar.
-
B
Can I still have milk tea, Doc?
-
A
That's your first question, and not the difference between an allergy and an intolerance?
-
B
Pasensiya na po. Ano po ba ang pinagkaiba?
Sorry. So what is the difference?
-
A
With an allergy, a person may break out in hives or have trouble breathing; with an intolerance, it's only gas or diarrhea.
-
B
Is that all? I can put up with that for my milk tea.
-
A
No need for that: just switch to oat milk. But only one a day, because of the sugar.
-
B
Oat milk, half sugar. Doc, you sound like you're working the counter at a milk tea shop.
