Day 71: Not the Salary They Promised
At the Department of Migrant Workers in Mandaluyong, Chloe (A), a young caregiver about to work abroad, asks Lydia (B), an officer, to look over her employment contract before her flight.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Ma'am, pakitingnan po ang kontrata ko. Lunes na po ang flight ko.
Ma'am, could you please look over my contract? My flight is on Monday.
-
B
According to the job order, it's eight hundred dollars. Isn't that what they promised you?
-
A
Yes, it was even in their ad on Facebook.
-
B
Then why does it say six hundred here? And what's this, "the employer will keep the passport"?
-
A
So it won't get lost, the agent said. Is that wrong?
-
B
That's your passport, not theirs. What if you want to come home and they have it?
-
A
Ano po ang puwede kong gawin? Nakapagpaalam na po ako sa pamilya ko.
What can I do? I've already said goodbye to my family.
-
B
There's still something we can do. File a complaint here right away, before you fly out.
