Day 80: Registered SIMs, Still Scammed

In the library of their law school in Manila, Nathaniel (A), Clarisse (B) and Jules (C), law students in the same study group, debate whether the SIM Registration Act has stopped text scams.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Republic Act No. 11934 states that every SIM must be registered, to stamp out text scams.

  2. B

Layunin, oo, pero natupad ba? Iyon ang itatanong ni Prof bukas.

That's the goal, sure, but did it work? That's what Prof is going to ask tomorrow.

  3. C

Under the law, unregistered SIMs get cut off. No more anonymous scammers.

  4. A

Tama.

Right. In short, every number has a name now, so they're easy to track down.

  5. B

May pangalan nga. Tingnan ninyo ang natanggap ko kaninang umaga.

Oh, it has a name, all right. Look at what I got this morning.

  6. C

"You've won fifty thousand pesos, click the link!" And from a registered number, too.

  7. A

They probably used a fake ID. So the loophole is in the enforcement, not in the law.

  8. B

O baka pareho.

Or maybe both. That's my answer for Prof, and here's my Exhibit A.
