Day 89: A Signature From Dubai
In a small law office in Cabuyao, Laguna, Joan (A), whose husband works in Dubai, asks Atty. Glenda (B), a lawyer and notary public she has just met, to notarize a special power of attorney so she can sell the family car.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Attorney, I'd just like to have this SPA notarized so we can sell our car.
-
B
Whose name is the car registered in, and who signed the SPA?
-
A
My husband's, and he's in Dubai. He's already signed it and sent it by email.
-
B
I'm sorry, but I can't notarize this. Under the law, the person who signed must appear before the notary in person.
-
A
But Attorney, he won't be home until next year. We need the money for tuition now.
-
B
I understand. However, he can appear at our consulate in Dubai.
-
A
Ibig sabihin po, walang silbi itong pinirmahan niya?
So what he signed is useless?
-
B
Not really. Have him sign it again in front of the consul, then have the original sent here by courier.
-
A
All right. So the courier will cost more than the notary.
