Day 93 of 160

Day 93: Printing Parts for Old Machines

In his tailoring shop in Santa Cruz, Manila, Jojo (A), whose old sewing machines need parts that are no longer made, listens as Jonas (B), a young engineer from the maker space down the street, explains how a 3D printer could help.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

My machines are older than you, Jonas. Nobody sells the parts anymore.

  2. B

That's why I'm here. We can make replacements for the broken ones with a 3D printer.

  3. A

In short, the machine copies the part, and by tomorrow I've got a replacement?

  4. B

It doesn't copy anything. I have to measure the part first and design it on the computer.

  5. A

Ah, ganoon pala.

Oh, so that's how it works. What about the bobbin case that keeps breaking, can it make that too?

  6. B

That's steel, plastic can't handle it. But the knobs and covers, no problem at all.

  7. A

So, not everything, but enough that I won't have to throw the machines out.

  8. B

All right, Mang Jojo, let's measure the first knob. The first one's free.
