Day 96 of 160

Day 96: Banana Leaves Instead of Plastic

At a public market in Cubao, Quezon City, Nicole (B), a young officer of the city's environment department, comes to the stall of Aling Conching (A), who has sold fish there for fifty years, to present a proposed rule on plastic bags.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Iha, ano 'yang dala mong papel? Bagong bayarin na naman ba?

Iha, what's that paper you've got there? Another new fee?

  2. B

No. Under the proposed ordinance, plastic will be banned in public markets.

  3. A

Butas agad!

Oh, try putting wet fish in a paper bag. It tears right through!

  4. B

You're right. Even so, its aim is to cut down on the plastic that clogs the canals.

  5. A

I know that. In the old days, we wrapped fish in nothing but banana leaves.

  6. B

Dahon ng saging po? Saan po kayo kukuha ng ganoon karami?

Banana leaves? Where would you get that many?

  7. A

My cousin in Laguna has a banana farm. Put down leaves and shoppers' own containers, not paper.

  8. B

I'll put that in the report, Aling Conching. You might even end up the face of the campaign.
