Day 95 of 160

Day 95: Pretty but Hollow

Recording an episode for their BookTok channel in a coffee shop in Santa Mesa, Manila, Bea (A) and Precious (B) review a much-hyped fantasy novel built on creatures from Philippine mythology.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Hi, BookTok fam! Today's review is "Ang Huling Bakunawa," and it's an instant five stars for me.

  2. B

Ang ganda ng cover, promise. Pero hindi lahat ng kumikinang ay ginto.

The cover is gorgeous, I swear. But not all that glitters is gold.

  3. A

Ano'ng ibig mong sabihin? May tikbalang, may diwata, may bakunawang kumakain ng buwan!

What do you mean? There's a tikbalang, a diwata, a bakunawa that eats the moon!

  4. B

That's exactly why it's a waste. It's all creature names, but the story and the characters have no depth.

  5. A

Grabe ka! Ang ganda kaya ng ending, sobrang nakakaiyak.

That's harsh! The ending is beautiful, it's such a tearjerker.

  6. B

Talaga?

Really? So what happened to Liwayway in the last chapter?

  7. A

Okay, okay, I only got as far as chapter ten. But the cover really is gorgeous, right?

  8. B

You heard it, BookTok fam: five stars for a book she didn't finish.
