Day 34: K-Pop for the Town Band

In the practice room of a town brass band in Bulacan, Romeo (A), the bandmaster, brings a request from the fiesta committee to Sammy (B), his trumpet player for thirty years.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Sammy, the fiesta committee has a request: on top of the marches, they want a K-pop song in the parade.

  2. B

Great. Thirty years of marching, and this is where we end up.

  3. A

Yes, and think of the honor: you'll be the first trumpeter in Bulacan ever to become a K-pop idol.

  4. B

Thanks, that's been my dream for ages. I just hope the uniform comes with new knees.

  5. A

I've already arranged it for the band, and you've even got a solo in the chorus, so let's try it first.

  6. B

Wait, why does the trumpet come in halfway through the beat? There's nothing like this in the "Washington Post" march.

  7. A

That's called syncopation, Maestro. You can't march straight through it, you have to sway.

  8. B

Sway, at my age? Fine, once more from the chorus. I almost had it.

  9. A

Mukhang nag-e-enjoy ka, a.

Well, well, who said this is where we'd end up? Looks like you're having fun.

  10. B

Don't you breathe a word to the committee, but next fiesta, I'm asking for two K-pop songs.
