Day 4: The Ending Is Not for Sale

How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

A
Sir Andres, our offer for the film rights to the novel is half a million pesos.
-
B
Salamat, binibini.
Thank you, young lady. But first I would like to know how your film is to end.
-
A
We changed the ending a little: Lourdes and Amado end up together.
-
B
Then it is no longer my father's novel. The ending is not for sale, young lady.
-
A
We'll make it a million, as long as you agree to a happier ending.
-
B
Not even for two million. That parting of theirs at the pier is what the whole country waited for in Liwayway.
-
A
Pero iba na po ang manonood ngayon. Kilig po ang gusto nila, hindi iyakan.
But audiences are different now. They want kilig, that giddy rush of romance, not sobbing.
-
B
Kilig without pain is mere candy. I shall accept your first offer, provided the ending stays whole.
-
A
Just half a million? I've never seen anyone turn down more before.
-
B
Money runs out, young lady. That ending will still be read by my grandchildren's grandchildren.
