Day 5: Make It Look Hand-Painted
Outside her new retro-themed milk tea shop on Maginhawa Street in Quezon City, Elaine (A) shows Fidel (B), a veteran sign painter who lost most of his trade to tarpaulin printing, the sign she wants him to paint.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Mang Fidel, here's the look I'm going for: a seventies-style sign, but clean, like a printout.
-
B
Hand-painted that doesn't look hand-painted. I can do that.
-
A
I also want the font on my laptop, exactly the same.
-
B
Of course, I'll copy your laptop. It's always been my dream to become a printer.
-
A
And hopefully no brush marks showing, so it looks polished.
-
B
Then I'll add a few little mistakes so it still looks handmade.
-
A
Mang Fidel, nang-aasar po ba kayo? Parang may gusto po kayong sabihin.
Mang Fidel, are you making fun of me? It sounds like there's something you want to say.
-
B
I'm not making fun of you, Ma'am. I painted signs here for thirty years before tarpaulins caught on, and now it's the tarpaulins that want to look like me.
-
A
In that case, the lettering is up to you. It's your hand I want to see, not my laptop.
-
B
Thank you, Ma'am. The mistakes are on the house. You can't buy those from a printer.
