A young woman (B) who has just moved into her own apartment brings bangus for lunch to her grandmother (A) in Malabon.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Magkano mo nabili 'yang bangus, apo?

How much did you pay for that bangus, dear?

  2. B

Dos singkuwenta po ang kilo. Hindi na po ako tumawad.

    Two-fifty a kilo. I didn't even haggle.

  3. A

Aba, mahal 'yan! Pagdating mo sa palengke, umikot ka muna bago bumili.

Goodness, that's expensive! When you get to the market, walk around first before you buy.

  4. B

Ano pa po ang mga rule ninyo, Lola?

What are your other rules, Lola?

  5. A

Habang tumatawad ka, huwag mong ipahalatang gusto mo. At mamili ka kapag pasara na.

While you're haggling, don't let on that you want it. And do your shopping when they're about to close.

  6. B

Ay, Lola, sa susunod po, sabay na tayong mamalengke.

Oh, Lola, next time, let's go to the market together.
